6 Tips for Amazing Pet Photos Using Your Phone

July 12, 2025

Capturing beautiful photos of your pets doesn’t require an expensive camera. With just your smartphone and a few simple tricks, you can take stunning images that showcase your pet’s personality. Whether you want to snap adorable pictures of your dog, cat, or any other furry or feathered friend, here are 6 simple tips for taking amazing pet photos with your phone.

Tip #1- Get on your pet's level

Instead of taking photos from above, try lowering yourself to your pet’s eye level. This perspective creates a more personal and engaging shot, allowing you to capture their expressions up close. It also helps make your pet the focal point of the image, drawing viewers in.

Tip #2- Use Natural Light

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of photography. Instead of using your phone’s flash, which can cause harsh shadows and red-eye, opt for natural light. Take photos near a window, in a shaded area outside, or during the "blue" or "golden" hours (shortly after sunrise or before sunset) for soft, flattering lighting. Consider taking photos through a window to take an amazing photo of your pet using light flares, shadows or reflections.

Tip #3 - Focus on your Pet's Eyes

A pet’s eyes are the window to their soul, and focusing on them can make your photo feel more expressive and lively. When taking a picture, tap on your pet’s eyes on your phone screen to ensure they are in sharp focus. This small tip can make a huge difference in taking amazing photos of your pet.

Tip #4 - Use Treats and Sounds to get your pet's attention

Getting your pet to sit still and look at the camera can be tricky. Use their favorite treats or toys to keep their attention. You can also make a soft noise, like a whistle or a squeak, to get them to tilt their head for an irresistibly cute expression. Be patient and ready to snap the shot quickly! Our cats love to cuddle together but rarely looked up- It was amazing to see their eyes in this photo!

Tip #5 - Avoid Using Flash on your phone

While your phone’s flash might seem helpful in low-light situations, it can startle your pet and create unnatural lighting. Instead, adjust your phone’s exposure settings by tapping on the screen and sliding up or down to brighten or darken the image as needed. If you must take photos in dim conditions, use a soft lamp or indirect lighting to keep the image looking natural.

Using the sun at different times of day and from different angles (in front and behind) can make a stunning photo of your pet. The morning sun (blue hour) behind our dogs creates a "hair light" which highlights their shape- planning when to take your picture can make an ordinary picture an amazing image of your pet.

Tip #6 - Tell a story- show your pet's personality

Pets are hilarious. Make sure you capture those moments that don't need a caption. Most of the time, your pet is just curious or bored, but if they get into anything more serious, be sure to contact your local veterinarian for medical advice- for all the silly and not-so-silly things!
